Seth Kim-Cohen [for Jaromir Hladik]
July - August 2006
Grand Projects, New Haven, CT
A retrospective of works yet to be made. Grand Projects is empty, save for six small, numbered plaques on the wall each spaced a few yards apart. Visitors are given a portable MP3 player and headphones for the audio tour. The tour features the voice of a guide who walks visitors through the exhibition, stopping at each numbered plaque to describe the as-yet-unmade work. Curators and critics offer insights and opinions about the works. for Jaromir Hladik questions the notions of past, present and future in terms of art history and aesthetic experience, corrupts the distinction between the artwork and its supporting materials, conflates fact and fiction, ignores the difference between material and concept.
"He measured other men’s virtues by what they had accomplished,
yet asked that other men measure him by what he planned someday to do."
- Jorge Luis Borges
